India Printing Works (IPW) founded in the pre-independence era on 1st March 1932 is one of the leading print houses in India which has been giving life to books for 9 decades. It provides ‘customized print solutions’ from concept to completion under one roof. Engaged in printing books, journals, periodicals, etc. for the business, social & arts community, it has stood the test of time adhering to the highest standards of quality & service. In its illustrious journey, it has won many national and international accolades.
What is seen today as the pages of books which have flipped by, is India Printing Works which has left its mark on the passage of time and occasionally been ahead of it, due to its respect for knowledge and its ability to bring about transformation.
IPW was established by Late Mr. Vishwanath Limaye and Late Mr. Wamanrao Bambardekar, who were working together in the reputed press of Madam Maniben Cara at Babulnath. Both of them had come from small towns in Konkan, but with the determination to build their own destiny, they thought of starting their own business. To begin with, they took charge of a press in Mazgaon in 1929, till they started IPW in 1932.
The press started with a Chandler and Price hand-fed platen machine and some hand composing cases. As the business started growing a secondhand monotype casting machine was added which was ultimately replaced by American and British linotype machines. The targeted market was books, magazines and annual reports along with various stationery jobs. The additions in the press-section were brand new automatic Heidelberg platen machines and double-crown, double-royal and quad-demy size Miehle letterpress cylinder printing machines.
The value of finishing jobs was never overlooked and an up-to-date bindery with brand new folding, sewing, cutting machines was deployed. One can scarcely believe that fifty years ago, machines like revolving gathering tables, endpaper pasting machines and case making machines were specially designed by the press on its own.
Mr. Limaye, a perfectionist, looked mainly after the production, while Mr. Bambardekar, who was a keen businessman, looked after sales. The perfect combination of meticulousness and business acumen with an inborn attitude of hard work played wonders and IPW, which started from a modest 500 sq. ft. unit graduated to 5000 sq. ft. unit in the same building, and soon became one of the leading printing houses in India in a very short span of time.
While principles and business values give shape to a machine led organization, it’s the tuning with technology which keeps it in continuous motion. From pre-press to post-press, IPW has partnered with the top manufacturers to provide clients with the best products consistently. From designing to CTP; high speed multi-colour offset & web presses to latest digital presses; UV capabilities to high end & accurate binding & finishing equipment, IPW has everything capable of working on complex operations. Moreover, the entire processes are streamlined and integrated with a robust supply chain management.
A print technologist from GIPT Mumbai and the second generation at IPW, Anand has been steering the operations of this legendary press very sincerely for last 40 years. His vision ensures that IPW provides state-of-the-art facilities and services to its clients. A true motivator and leader, he is the guiding force behind IPW’s acknowledgment as a Customer Centric organization.
His publishing house, ‘Inking Innovations’ has published around 100 titles in the past 9 years. But even more noteworthy is his work in Public Domain which impresses many with its consistency. A people person, he has been a 24 x 7 mentor and a guide to many people in the industry. He has served the printing associations in various capacities at the local, state and national level and delivered various noteworthy results.
An organization is the reflection of its employees and at IPW there is a perfect bonding between the owner and the employees. It has a good blend of old experienced hands providing the gift of maturity and young upcoming talent giving the novelty a modern printing operation required. IPW is one such organization where we stand tall on strong foundations of honesty and reliability.
There have been a lot of loyal employees in the organization which has been its core strength.
While awards make the journey worthwhile, the real assets of the business are its customers. IPW has had the privilege to serve their loyal clients for a long period of time. Some of the important ones are: –
“Our relation with IPW is right from the year when we started our journey in 2006. Our fascination for IPW comes not only because of their professional printing quality, but also because of their timely delivery schedule and professional redressal to any of our grievances. Mr. Anand Limaye had been a backbone of our organization when it come to our printing needs or any other requirements. He has also been our source of inspiration and a wise advisor for our other aspects of business. IPW was and will be our prime partner for printing requirements.”
“Anand is a rare bird who is very much proud of his vocation. A pride that he inherited from his father. I met Anand Limaye in 1993 when my Marathi book ‘Jana Mana’ was to be published by Madhukaka Kulkarni of Shri Vidya Prakashan. But one of the main conditions was that the book should be printed in a well known & celebrated press of Mumbai. At the launch Sunitabai Deshpande told me that the main attraction was that there were no mistakes in the book. Such was the level of quality & controls in their press. Now IPW has become the most dependable press. It has been expanded to a great level by Anand.”
Inking Innovations, a publishing house was started by Anand Limaye in 2013. With ‘PS Ramani – A Legend’, Anand has entered the world of publishing and started building a list of unique publications, both in English and Marathi.
In last 6 years, it has published nearly 100 books. The range extends from the book written by Dr. Dhananjay Keer ‘यांनी इतिहास घडविला’ to the autobiography written by the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Ram Naik, ` Charaiveti Charaiveti,` and from the book ` musalmani mulkhatli mushafiri` written by Shripad Ramchandra Tikekar in 1931, published by Manisha Tikekar in 2019 after in-depth study and research and the recently published book based on the work accomplishments of our Honorable Prime Minister, Narendra Modi: ‘junya wyasthanna hadra denara Sarjak’{The Creative Disruptor} are also to be included. Apart from these books in Marathi language we have also published the original Marathi books translated into English language, of the stalwarts like Dr Arun Tikekar, Reputed surgeon in Mumbai Dr Premanand Ramani, Dr H.V. Sardesai from Pune, and ‘My Flirtations with Politics’ by reputed Lawyer Arun Sathe.
“Two Friends” written by Bharat Sasne is no exception to this legacy. It is the English translation of the original Marathi book‘ Don Mitra’. Abundant Eminent literature in Marathi is available, but due to the language barrier it cannot be wide spread. And hence this is our earnest effort to make the literature available to the readers across other than Marathi, by translating it in English.
Even though, the number of publications seem to be small, we have the honour and pride to state that every book can be looked upon as a reference document and a message giver to the society.
